Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Tenambit Hot Water Services

Hot water work splits into six jobs, and a few questions on the phone narrow down which one yours is:

Repairs

A dead element, a faulty thermostat, a weeping relief valve or a pilot that won't stay lit, fixed on your existing unit.

Replacements

Old storage tanks swapped for new units, sized to the house and quoted before anything gets disconnected.

New installs

Full systems put into renovations, townhouse builds and homes changing fuel type.

Gas hot water

Gas-fired tanks and instant units, connected and leak-tested by our gas fitters.

Heat pump and solar

Efficient units sized, installed and set up for Hunter Valley conditions, detailed on the heat pump page.

No hot water at 2am

After-hours failures handled under emergency plumbing, at the after-hours rate, which you hear first.

Why Do the Old Storage Tanks Quit Suddenly?

A storage tank rarely announces its retirement. These are the faults that end a unit's life:

Rust through the tank wall

Once the glass lining goes, water finds the steel, and the leak starts as a drip and finishes as a flood.

A failed element or thermostat

The tank holds water but nothing heats it, which is a small repair on a young tank and a warning sign on an old one.

Valve and pipework corrosion

The fittings on top of an old tank corrode quietly, and a wet patch at the base is the first sign.

Sediment build-up

Years of heating cycles leave sediment in the base, and a rumbling tank is working harder than it should to do the same job.

Keep the Old Unit or Go New?

Age and fault decide the first part

A five-year-old tank with a dead element is a repair. A twenty-year-old unit leaking from the base is a replacement, because a new valve on a rusting tank buys months, not years.

Running costs decide the rest

An old electric storage tank and a modern heat pump or gas unit are not close on the energy bill, and the difference compounds every quarter. Where fixing and replacing both make sense, you see two prices and pick.

How a Replacement Day Runs

  1. 1

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4915 2998 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 2

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 3

    The swap itself

Water and power or gas get isolated, the old tank gets lifted out, and the new unit is set, connected and fired up before we leave.

  4. 4

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

Electric storage hot water unit after installation

Electric Systems: Storage Tanks and Instant Units

An electric storage tank heats a full cylinder overnight or on a timer and holds it ready. Repairs keep a sound tank alive; replacements move it to a modern, better insulated unit. Instant electric units suit point-of-use spots where running a tank makes no sense.

Gas Hot Water Systems

A lot of the suburb's mid-century homes had gas piped in after they were first built, and where that line exists two options stay open. Gas storage tanks hold a volume of hot water ready, while continuous-flow units heat the water as you draw it, so the cylinder never runs dry. Either one is hooked up and lit by our gas fitters, and other gas jobs are on the gas fitting hub.

Heat Pump and Solar Units

A heat pump unit harvests the warmth already in the air around it instead of burning energy to make heat from scratch, which cuts running costs against an old electric tank, and solar units put the roof to work. Area-level install figures record 1,774 heat pump units and 1,056 solar units, so neither is an experiment here. The heat pump page works through sizing, siting and the install itself.

Older Streets, Older Tanks

The housing age drives the work

Tenambit is dominated by 1960s to 1980s brick-veneer homes, and plenty of the storage tanks fitted when they were new have outlived what the maker designed them for.

Newer infill brings different jobs

The townhouses built on the fringes since the 2000s run younger units, where a valve or thermostat repair makes more sense than a swap.

The winter reveal

Cool Hunter Valley nights push a struggling unit over the line, so a tank that limped through summer gives up on the first cold snap.

The Figure on a Hot Water Job

Four things shape that figure:

  • Which unit you choose A heat pump needs a level outdoor spot with airflow, so it is more work than dropping a new electric cylinder where the old one stood.
  • Access to the old unit A tank wedged in a tight side passage has to be drained and walked out in pieces.
  • The existing connections Reusing sound water, gas and flue pipework keeps the figure down; upgrading them adds to it.
  • The hour A tank that dies on Saturday night costs more to swap then than on Monday morning.

Jobs That Sit Outside This Page

When we're not the right call: if a new heat pump or bigger electric unit needs its own circuit or the switchboard upgraded, that wiring is a licensed electrician's job, booked alongside ours. A gas smell inside the house goes to the gas leak page first.

From a Customer Who Needed a New Tank

"They gave us a prompt quote with different options and helped us with a temporary hot water tank while the new system arrived and was installed." Karen

Hot Water Questions, Answered

Do you replace hot water systems in Tenambit on weekends?

Yes. A Saturday or Sunday tank swap costs more than a weekday one, and you agree that rate before we book it in. The work itself is the same whenever it happens, and it carries our 365-day warranty on all work.

What hot water system suits an older brick-veneer house in Tenambit?

Start with whether gas is piped in, where a new unit can sit and how many showers it has to cover. With gas already piped to the house, a gas storage or continuous-flow unit joins electric and heat pump on the list. We look at what is there and quote the choices that fit.

Can we keep hot water while the new system is being sorted?

Yes, a temporary hot water tank can go in while a replacement is arranged. It means showers keep running through the wait for the new unit. The option gets priced into the quote, so nothing about it lands as a surprise on the invoice.

Is a heat pump hot water system worth it in the Hunter Valley?

Heat pump units run efficiently through the hot summers here and handle the cool winter nights, and the area has a healthy install count behind it. Whether one suits your place depends on the install spot and airflow. The heat pump page runs through the details.
